Mental Health in the Movies

With so many films now available to us at just the click of our remotes, we thought we’d take a look at how people living with mental health issues are portrayed in the movies.

Sometimes there's nothing better than curling up to watch a new or favourite film. With so many films now available to us at just the click of our remotes, we thought we’d take a look at how people living with mental health difficulties are portrayed in the movies.

Film expert with the RTÉ Guide, Michael Doherty, dropped into studio during WIMS FM  to highlight Hollywood’s chequered past when it comes to the depiction of people experiencing mental ill-health in films such as One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, as well as how attitudes have noticeably changed in films such as Silver Linings Playbook.

You can hear what Michael had to say below. If you're interested in finding out more, why not take a look at how films like Inside Out can help children and young people tackle complex mental health topics or check out our Frame of Mind short film competition.
