Mental Health in the Movies

Awards season culminates with the much anticipated Oscars this weekend and amidst the glamour and gúnas, we thought we’d take a look at how people living with mental health issues are portrayed in the movies.

Film expert with the RTÉ Guide, Michael Doherty dropped into studio during WIMS FM last October to highlight Hollywood’s chequered past when it comes to the depiction of people experiencing mental illness in films such as One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, as well as how attitudes have noticeably changed in films such as Silver Linings Playbook.
