Primary School Special 2019

Find out more about our special show for primary school children.

For World Mental Health Day - Thursday, 10 October - we invited classrooms across the country to tune in to WIMS FM for a programme tailored especially for primary school students and teachers.

Television presenters, Jon Slattery and Ciara Whelan, along with child and adolescent psychotherapist Dr Colman Noctor, hosted two hours of programming focused on positive mental health promotion aimed at primary schools.

They were joined live on air by a number of guests including Walk in My Shoes Project Manager, Amanda McArdle, who talked all things Walk in My Shoes, and author and former teacher, Dave Rudden, who writes horror, fantasy and science fiction books.

Some of the content schools included:

  • Interactive exercises
  • Visualisation exercises
  • Book reviews
  • A special 'worry box' feature where Dr Colman Noctor addressed common worries held by children such as worrying about making friends, that they are not good at sport, about the climate, that none of their friends will play with them. about doing well in tests and exams and more.

The second hour of the show focused on teachers and included:

  • The launch of our new School Portal
  • Ideas for curriculum-appropriate mental health initiatives
  • Tips on how to mind your mental health in a demanding job.

Schools who wanted a shout-out live on air could email requests into the station - with lots of schools across Ireland getting involved.
